TALISON GREENBUSHES PTY LTD

Environment

The Greenbushes Mine is adjacent to the townsite. This close proximity is the key aspect that influences the mine's impact. Pro-active environmental and community programmes ensure the mine continues to have the least possible impact on the local community while offering economic and employment opportunities.

Environmental staff on site carry out regular environmental monitoring on surface and ground water, air quality and noise with regular reporting to regulatory authorities.

An environmental committee, comprised from staff across the site, meets regularly to discuss environmental issues and implement environmental programmes. Initiatives include benchmarking with other mining operations, hydrocarbon management, waste management and regular auditing.

In 2006, the Greenbushes mine site received Western Australia's highest environmental award for industry - the Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence.

Community

Talison Minerals Greenbushes Operations maintains a close and cooperative relationship with the local community. This includes giving financial and other support to many community groups and participation in local shows. The mine is also actively involved in the Greenbushes Eco-Cultural Discovery Centre (open weekends, Wednesday and Friday during the week and by appointment at other times) and walk trails through the town and surrounding forest.

The public mine lookout with views across the mining operation is open daily from 8:00am until 5:00pm. Hundreds of visitors including technical, school and community groups visit the mine each year.

Quality

In January 2002 the Tantalum processing stream achieved BVQI certirfication to ISO 9001:2000 for quality management systems. As a result the company has a world recognized quality management system across the entire Greenbushes Operations. The Lithium minerals processing stream also has ISO 9001 certification. The system covers quality certification for mining, processing, maintenance, purchasing, packaging, dispatch and laboratory functions.

The site also received ISO 14001 quality environment certification in September 2001. BVQI audits in both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 are carried out six monthly. Internal audits are also carried out on a regular basis and reviewed by management.

Safety

Safety is a way of life at the Greenbushes Site. Staff in the Occupational Health, Safety and Training Department use safety management systems to coordinate health, safety and training on site.

Mine Rescue

There is an active mines rescue team at the Greenbushes Mine comprised of staff from across various areas of site including mining and processing. They meet regularly for training and compete in State and Regional competitions to maintain high skills levels.
